PI Planning Facilitation

The RTE is the chief facilitator of PI Planning — SAFe’s signature event. They orchestrate the 2-day session for 50–125 people, ensuring alignment on objectives, visibility of dependencies, and commitment to a shared plan.

ART Event Orchestration

Beyond PI Planning, the RTE facilitates all ART-level events — System Demo, Inspect & Adapt, ART Sync, Coach Sync, and PO Sync — ensuring each produces actionable outcomes.

The Release Train Engineer is not a project manager and not a people manager. The role exists to make the ART effective through servant leadership, facilitation excellence, and relentless focus on flow. As the ART matures, the RTE shifts from hands-on coordination toward coaching and organizational change.
